On October 31, China's 5G officially announced commercialization and became the country that launched 5G commercialization after South Korea and the United States. From November 20th to 23rd, many companies gathered at the Beijing World 5G Conference to demonstrate the use of 5G technology to intelligently customize electronic equipment, Industrial machinery and agricultural machinery and equipment, and even automobiles.
China has determined to accelerate the large-scale construction of 5G networks. In the next step, how to build 5G intensively and greenly and explore 5G for sustainable development has also started to attract attention. Beijing recently held two consecutive communications events-"PT Exhibition" and "World 5G Conference". Many industry professionals said that the resource consumption and sustainability issues of 5G communication systems are mainly reflected in two aspects: It is the sustainability of site resources, and the second is the sustainability of energy resources.
Solving the Dilemma of the Site
In June, the base station of the Golden Home Community in Changchun was demolished because of residents' opposition, and the news that the entire community was in a "signal dead end" caused widespread debate. In September, the Beijing operator revealed that a macro station with a cost of 500,000 to 600,000 yuan, a community property with a high price of 300,000 yuan, "coordination fee", the operator had to give up the site selection.
Sites are the consumption of space resources by base stations. From the 2G era to the present, the number of global physical base stations has increased exponentially to nearly 8 million. In the 5G era, the propagation characteristics of high-frequency bands and the need to connect everything require an increase in the number of sites several times. There are two major problems with site resources: the difficulty in selecting a new base station and the high rate of loss of existing sites. Residents' opposition, property fee increases, and urban renewal have made it difficult to find a base station.
Facing the problem of the site, the industry consensus is that the base station will be integrated with social infrastructure in the future, especially with street pole resources. Global pole resources are 20 times more than existing sites.
And specifically how to combine reuse, China has made a comprehensive demonstration this year. As of November, more than thirty provinces and cities have issued policies for simplified site approval and public resource opening. For example, Shenzhen requires all agencies to sort out resource lists such as light poles, monitoring poles and gantry cranes for the construction and use of 5G base stations. Taking this opportunity, various enterprises are also actively exploring. China Tower cooperates with power grid companies and light pole operating companies to obtain a total of about 8 million social pole tower resources. The equipment supplier Huawei also proposed the Open Site initiative, drawing on operators, policy makers, towers and light pole industries to build a cross-industry cooperation platform.
Especially worth mentioning are the 5G smart light poles and 5G multifunctional poles. The multi-pole integration of cities, the encounter of smart cities and 5G have given birth to this vent, so that every new pole in the future will naturally have a 5G base station interface. To this end, China's national standards for 5G smart light poles are already being formulated, and local standards in cities such as Shanghai and Shenzhen have also been introduced.
Taking Shanghai as an example, starting from 2018, Shanghai has launched a joint improvement project to integrate the reduction and standardization of existing facilities, and consider the equipment as a whole. In 2019, the Shanghai Municipal Government took the lead in formulating the "comprehensive pole" standard, and 4G and 5G communication equipment deployment space is also included in the standard. By the end of 2020, Shanghai will build and transform social poles on 500 kilometers of roads, and will provide 30,000 5G site resources, which is equivalent to 75% of Shanghai's current total number of sites.
Multi-function pole with 5G interface reserved in Shanghai
In Beijing Yonghe Temple Street, the smart pole with 5G interface reserved has begun to be piloted. The remarkable effect of its landscaping has excited surrounding residents. The smart pole and multi-function pole can not only solve the problem of the site of the mobile base station, but also greatly reduce the comprehensive municipal cost.
Develop efficient green 5G
In addition to the site issue, the issue of 5G energy is beginning to see improvement.
The problems to be solved by 5G energy are divided into two. What is urgent in the short term is the cost of energy system transformation, and what needs to be solved in the long term is the high energy consumption of base stations.
In April, China Tower and Huawei jointly launched 5G Power. With innovative technologies such as smart lithium peak shaving, intelligent boosting, and intelligent energy storage, the site can achieve "unchanged mains, fixed power No additional cabinets ", low-cost and efficient deployment. 5G Power also won the 2019 Sustainable Development Award from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
It is reported that the early 5G deployment relied on existing sites, and the energy system of many base stations will face transformation due to the superposition of 2/3/4 / 5G. Perform recalculations, design plans, and even upgrades. According to the estimates of China Tower, more than half of the base stations involved in energy transformation, and some of them also need to take a long time to expand the city power capacity. Tower and Huawei's innovative solutions effectively solve these problems.
Transformation of 5G power system
In addition to saving the cost of retrofitting, the new scheme introduced this time also innovatively links the power supply system with the main equipment to save energy, which is also a major feature.
As for energy saving, China's telecommunications industry has screamed its vision of "0 bits, 0 watts."
China Mobile and Huawei have tried PowerStar, an artificial intelligence energy-saving solution, in Tibet and Inner Mongolia to achieve energy-saving coordination in multi-frequency mobile networks. The calculation results in Lhasa show that the average daily energy consumption at a single site is reduced by 69.48 degrees.
5G energy efficiency is 10-20 times higher than 4G, which is a hundred times higher than 3G. With the large-scale construction of 5G networks, 2G and 3G networks will gradually reduce frequency and drop out of the network, which will further reduce network energy consumption.
5G will go faster and better
All major cities, provinces and regions in China are currently accelerating the deployment of 5G. Now we start to take a longer-term view, and embedding and investing in the sustainable development of site and energy resources will make 5G go faster and better.
